Controllers, special apps, iOS 13, confusion...

I've seen some iOS compatible controllers that require a special app to function (for key mapping I think). However, with iOS 13 my Xbox controller just works. with iOS 13 will these other controllers now not need their special apps? I'm slightly confused over how this all works... Thanks :)

my educated guess would be, that those controllers still require their companion apps. i think apple just implemented bridges for xbox and playstation controllers, leaving the existing controller ecosystem untouched.

Thanks for the reply. Regarding these companion apps, do you know specifically what they're for? For example, does a game have to be 'added' to the app by the app developers in order for it to be compatible with the controller? Or is are the companion apps simply for helping to map the button controls?

I guess I'm just trying to figure out whether these controllers support enough games to be worth it? I'm looking at, for example, the iPega 9087S Red Knight.
